Dark and monumentally, that's the start of the second opuses of the Australian Avantgarde Metallers VIRGIN BLACK. Their debut "Sombre Romantic" had been already hard to handle, so many reviewers had their problems with. Album number two is all the worse. That darkness and grief, which is acoustically transformed, seems to crush you in the beginning. Melancholic and hopeless, this death choir of tormented souls spans over a playing time of over an hour! Then you will be tired, down but somehow happy!

The foundation of the whole is definitively dragging Doom Metal, which reaches new dimensions with its sacral arrangements, the calm acoustic parts and the various samples (or are this real cellos?). The various ideas of VIRGIN BLACK seem to be endless because it's such impressive what they offer, I'm so astonished. The vocals weave between tenor vocals, despaired mourning and a powerful approach! Seems like a Peter Gabriel on Doom! That's unbelievable, no doubt. But this Epic sound has something magical and either you're amazed or you can't never befriend with. There's nothing between...so, I have to admit, that I also can't listen to that "play of grief" all the time, but I'm fascinated and somehow shocked! - Ralf
