FANTASTIC WEIRD BLACK METAL ! !

Black metal in places, doom in others and a galaxy of paths between, the now-defunct Ved Buens Ende's 1995 debut has been reissued, and is still pretty startling. Despite the diversity of material on offer here, the band manage to maintain a continuity leaving the ambient and emotional matter to flow into the harsher moments without upsetting or breaking the skin of the water which lets us stay inside the trance rather than disrupt it.
Much of the vocals are sung in a chant like fashion as if each phrase is a profound mantra, while the grim vocals are distorted and raw in perfect synchronicity with the machine-gun drums. This is artful, interesting and mood altering music in the same vein as early Opeth that somehow atones for its flaws – flat singing and occasionally haphazard playing - by its potential. Closer 'To Swarm Deserted Away' is particularly touching complete with accordion. Perhaps given time to grow, Ved Buens Ende would have developed the maturity and coherence that is promised here, and like Opeth go on to greater things.
