While many scenes are built upon the success, and subsequent plagiarism, of previously established artists, the Czech underground is all but devoid of the kind of stylistic aping that is so prevalent in many of today's extreme metal hotbeds. Perhaps what sets Czech bands apart from their contemporaries is their ability to combine concrete technology with abstract human concepts. Here we find bands utilizing samplers, break beats and a rather oblique sense of humor to startling effect. If one considers that Frank Zappa once served as the American ambassador to this country, it's quite easy to visualize the kind of quirky, yet infectious, music this country has been quietly churning out over the course of the last decade. The logical conclusion would be to gather the most exciting and original artists for the benefit of the rest of the world. Czech Assault, the third installment in Relapse's underground campaign, presents 5 uncompromising death and grind bands representing the unique styles currently flourishing in the Czech Republic.
