Vanitas is an Austrian band, which falls into the gothic/doom realm of metal. However unlike some bands in this genre the majority of Vanitas's music is rather upbeat, and you might actually find yourself head banging to the music. Theirs lots of double bass on the drums, and some fast catchy guitar riffs. Although the album has moments where it's more calm and gothic sounding. The vocals are mostly in a doom/black metal style, but there are also whisper like vocals, and some beautiful female vocals. The female vocals are not really used all that often, and they mostly just serve as backing vocals for the main vocalist. However they are very nice sounding and it's a real pleasure to hear them. Lyric wise this album is completely written in German so I don't have the slightest idea what they are singing about. My guess is it's the typical topics that bands of this nature tend to write about. This is the bands debut album, and for a debut album I can honestly say this is a very enjoyable listen. I've always enjoyed bands that make music in this vein, and even though I hate the German language I'm having no problem listening to this album. Vanitas is not doing anything new with their debut album, but there doing it good and it was enough to please me. If you enjoy bands like Tristania or Sins of thy Beloved I think you'll really love Vanitas.
