Unholy Matrimony - Misologie CD Review

2004-07-10 : Don
The second release by Vladimir Cochet's Unholy Matrimony project, and it certainly does not disappoint this fan. While it is a little bit shorter than it's predecessor, "Love and Death", the tracks are of good length. There isn't as much of the piano parts, or full piano songs, like on the "Love and Death" disc, and more straight Black Metal. The musicianship on this disc sounds even better than the last, with the guitars having a much more notable role. The drums are still programmed, and can be hard to take for people new to Vladimir's music, but once you get used to them, they're wonderful. The songs are generally fast, and very brutal, with a pretty standard Black Metal growl throughout, with some vocal variations in the form of more guttural growls, spoken/whispered parts, etc. The guitar riffs are amazing, as well as the various guitar melodies, proving this well rounded Artist's talent for music. Not every song is lightning fast, but the album does begin with a song that very well may be the fastest song you'll ever hear. Throughout the 40+ minutes of the disc, there are amazing slow parts, fast parts, guitars, synth, etc., which adds a very epic and beautiful feel to the album. Not for the weak, this album may be looked down upon by people upon their first listens (as some reviews may show). The lyrics are entirely in French, so I can't comment here. The album comes in a fold out, Cruciform digipack, with the CD itself on the center panel, and lyrics to the songs on the other 4. The artwork on the digipack are scenes of trees and water and what not, and are absolutely gorgeous to look at. This album is well worth every penny, and is one of Vladimir's most impressive releases to date.
