ULCUS was formed in March 1994 under the moniker ULCUS MOLLE. Hailing from the rural placecalled Sogndal at the mighty Sognefjord in Western Norway, the band recorded its first 4 track rehearsal tape, "YGGDRASIL" for their own enjoyment. In Late 1996, ULCUS Molle recorded a self financed 7 track CD called "ROLES" which displayed a mix of technical thrash metal and power metal. Due to the incredilble amount of positive revieus, several record labels offered the band a record deal but none of the offers was considered good enough. Another reason for not wanting to sign a deal at that time was the fact that the band was still looking for their own style of metal. When the line-up changed after the recording of "ROLES" the band headed towards a more original approach of their musical expression and creation of their own style. In April 1998, ULCUS Molle released the"MALICOUS TRIUMPH" mini CD which showed a much darker, more melodic but also more aggressive sound than ever before.It marked a new start for the band because this was the direction they wanted to pursue.The mini CD was again accepted very well by the metal press and several record labels showed their intrest once again. The band decide that their time had come to sign a real record deal, and so they did. After comparing deals the band decide that one label stood out of the crowed because this label showed a real genuine intrest in the band. And so itwas decided, in 1999 Ulcus Molle changed the name into ULCUSand siged a deal with Belgian label SHIVER RECORDS. During the summer of 1999 the band started the recordings of their debut full lenght CD at the X-ray studios in Sarpsborg, Norway. The same studio as where bands as Covenant,Kampfar, Ragnarok, etc… also recorded some of their material. The result of all the hard work of the band, is a wonderful masterpiece listening to the name of "CHERISH THE OBSCURE". The album consists out of 9 tracks which are a combination of some of the best of today death / black / thrash metal that you'll have ever heard. The dark and gloomy atmospheres, the aggression yet highly melodic music, the majestic keyboards and the first class song-writing, makes this album really stand out ! You don't have to be "into" the scene to hear and amit that this is truly a very talented and rather unique band for sure. "CHERISH THE OBSCURE" is an album that shows so much varation from start to finish which will make it a real delight to lisen to. ULCUS is a band that will definitely win the hearts of many different people and "CHERISH THE OBSCURE" is only the beginning of their journey !
