UCK Grind - The Human Race Must Be Destroyed

  | CD

UCK Grind-The Human Race Must Be Destroyed Turkey's UCK Grind have just released their first full-length album The Human Race Must Be Destroyed, delivering a nasty slab of death metal riffs, pounding drums, and deep low grunts that are hard to believe at times. It's astonishing to think of the sounds the human throat can produce.

TC on bass and vocals is a very aggressive singer, with a pronounced accent that sounds more Russian than Turkish. The album begins with "Welcome to Underground", a song with a lengthy spoken intro where TC tells the listener what they should expect from The Human Race Must Be Destroyed. Towards the end, the song picks up a heavy guitar, bass and drum combination emphasizing his inhumane vocals and leading into the groovy yet deeply grindcore-infused "Vechen", a song shorter than three minutes, like most other cuts on the album. Up next is the impressive title track, pushing the five-minute mark on the album. This is more of a sludgy doom metal piece with guttural vocals. The guitar work builds dense walls of doom riffs that merge with violent kick drums and pounding bass lines. Compared to the other pieces, this track is a lot more intense and seems more developed.

The following cuts rarely reach three minutes, and are mostly highlighted by punk-style grooves that are morphed into cutting riffs, best noticed on "We Believe in Our Gunz". "All Women Are Death" is a more interesting piece of work, displaying sex scenes and a more modern soundscape overall. It's arguable how well it fits the otherwise menacing death metal these guys offer, but it might make for a fun live track. Some cool bass lines decorate the rhythmically nuanced "Nation 31", whilst "Everest" is another short piece, marked by a driving guitar tone. "Earthquake" just runs 21 seconds but has some truly sick bass soloing that actually evokes the effects of a 7.2 earthquake on the Richter scale. The album closes with another sludgy, heavily riff-oriented track, "Tired", recalling the earliest days of the British doom-death metal scene. I personally feel if the band had pursued this type of writing a bit more rather than the more monochromatic groove-based formula, the album could have been more interesting. However, then UCK Grind would be more of a doom-death band than grindcore.

This is an interesting album and should interest fans of extreme metal who'd like to hear some really brutal vocals and ominous rhythm work. -Sea of Tranquility
