Here we have brutality delivered with the knife followed by yet more brutality, this time delivered with the hammer.

First up SOULLESS who offer up their "Peri Psyches" demo for your delectation. By their own declaration, the band draw influence from DEICIDE and MORBID ANGEL therefore we are looking back a bit in time. The tracks range from the relatively short to the relatively long, the title track being the longest and most impressive. This song has a real sense of menace and cold detachment, mid paced for the most part, it stalks the listener gradually increasing the pressure. The lead riffs pirouette around the driving rhythm as the tension builds. The bass flatly punctuates the proceedings and the drums verge on free form at times. The austerity presented has an almost martial bleakness, this track justifies the band's name by itself.

Tracks like "Desecration Is Now" storm along in rapid fashion with surging riffs cauterised by acid lead work. Everything here has an urgency about it but no panic. Vocals are gruff 'n' ready with a certain aloofness. The riffs pile in virtually tripping over themselves, but slower sections allow time for the band to compose themselves again for the next rush. SOULLESS are possessed of a hint of the avant garde which prevents them sounding stale and imparts some identity to their rage to lift them just above the pack. There is an undoubted show of creativity on display which demonstrates there is no dearth of ideas. Onwards and upwards for these boys I reckon.

Now for the hammer. EXSECRATOR is a pure bludgeoning attack. All the finesse of their split mates has been dowsed in petrol, set aflame and then put out by the band collectively pissing on the ashes. Of more interest to those who rate bands like INCANTATION, this band cite similar influences to the first band but have devolved into a more murky prospect. The edges have been blurred, though the impact is great.
