Though they possess the requisite doom and gloom stylings to place themselves squarely in the stoner rock camp, Place Of Skulls adds a unique spiritual touch to their Black Sabbath/Blue Cheer riff metal that gives heft and thoughtfulness to their mastodon crunch. Guitarist/vocalist Victor Griffin has an impressive resume that features proto-doom metal merchants Pentagram and Death Row, and his newfound Christian faith figures prominently in Place Of Skulls material (the band's moniker is taken from a Bible quotation). Secular fans need not fear preachiness or a softening of approach. Griffin's massive Iommi-style riffs are as blue and molten as ever and the songs are intelligent ponderings on the meaning of religion in the modern world. Besides, even Black Sabbath had their own Christian's creed ('After Forever'), which rocked with as much power and threat as anything in their catalogue, so the precedent has been set. Place Of Skulls delivers all the ear-damaging distortion and intensity metal fans are hungry for, along with food for thought that isn't usually found between the lines of similar bands
