Pagan Hellfire - A Voice from Centuries Away

Pagan Hellfire-A Voice from Centuries Away One method of experiencing the term "haunting", I have found, is to shut out the lights, grab a set of headphones, and let "A Voice From Centuries Away", the new disc from PAGAN HELLFIRE, take you where it will…

In a time where Black Metal has taken refuge among heavy hitting recording studios such as Abyss and Fredman, and would now appear discontent without bombarding its listeners with a barrage of synthesized keyboard-orchestras, Incarnatus (the force behind PH) strictly maintains many of the key factors in what truly defines this darkest of sub-genres. You see, unlike the path many of today's legends and masters have chosen to take, "A Voice From Centuries Away" strictly demonstrates that it's the dark and shrouded atmosphere, first and foremost, that fabricates a real BM record, regardless of fancy production, and sound samples.

As implicated, "A Voice From Centuries Away" has a very raw, in-the-woods-at-night feel to it, that I truly find hard to put into words. OK, try this one. After reading this, go out as deep as you possibly can into a forest, at night, by yourself. That basically sums up my review. Now, imagine it… The faint chill in the air carrying the scent of dead leaves, pine, and burning wood. The sounds of the howling breeze echoing through dark, overlooking pillars; calling out to you in a hidden and far distant tongue. The shadows tap you from behind, but you can see nobody through the encompassing darkness. You are alone…

One king of the BM-scene has been quoted as saying something to the effect of Black Metal being built with Satan as it's foundation, therefore you can't write BM without a Satanic theme. PAGAN HELLFIRE defiantly disproves this statement, and demonstrates that in doing so, you needn't hide behind the dark prince, Odin, or pointless layers of corpse paint to create an object worthy of praise. In fact, I would even venture to claim that Incarnatus has stepped even closer in perfecting what would now sadly seem but a lost or dying art among even the most sturdy Vikings in the scene…
