Ov Dust - Resurrection of an American Heretic

  | CD

It's been a while since our brethren on the other side of the Atlantic produced a decent black metal band: while young upstarts such as Abigail Williams, Skeletonwitch and recent visitors Toxic Holocaust have been doing a damn good impression of trying to keep the scene alive Stateside in the face of the continued onslaught of the so-called 'moral majority' that has brought the nation as a whole to its knees, only the resurrection of the legendary Morbid Angel has really given any indication to those of us on this side of the pond that there is, indeed, any real darkness in the light!

Now, coming crawling out of the sewers of New York City come ov Dust - a band so devoted to the black metal cause that they even adopt the 'ov' spelling so preferred by our Scandinavian and eastern European brethren (and particularly the antiChrist himself, Nergal). And, as the manhole covers in the Big Apple pop open, what a particularly foul stench emanates from below the feet of the unsuspecting do-gooders sipping their skinny mocha lattes on Broadway and Fifth Avenue!

Right from the off, the quartet lay down their black gospel with heretical intent, with the ironically titled 'Final Act' - a blistering barrage of blastbeats from John Dario (aka Johnny Riott of NYC sleazers The Erotics) underpinning the fiercesome guitar work of D. Von Staub and the brutal vocals of N. Dru Virus. This is proper black metal, evil seeping from its every pore, that harkens back to the dawn of the genre and captures the anarchic, raw, energetic feel of the likes of Darkthrone, Mayhem, Tiamat and Celtic Frost (in whose honour ov Dust close ROAAH with a nihilistic and intimidating version of 'Dethroned Emperor').

This should be essential listening for any black metal fan, with the likes of 'Eternal Return', 'LXVI: Matanza de Tiburon' and 'Black Decay' (which itself would given even Slayer a run for their money) sure to become classics of the genre in the not too distant future
