They play traditional black metal with death metal influences just fine, and a few of the songs are in that vein. It's when they get experimental that it really gets interesting. They insert saxophone solos over intense, thrashy guitars which sounds odd, but good. They also throw in strange synth riffs in addition to the usual symphonic keyboards.
