Obituary-World Demise + 3 Reviewer: Bill Vogel III

Greetings. Well, when my head is REALLY screwed-up I have found solice in EXTREMELY heavy music. I have also found that the best types of Metal for these situations are Doom Metal and Death Metal. And the new Obituary CD, "World Demise," is quite good whether your head is warped from thinking or not.

I thought it would be impossible for Obituary to top their last effort, "The End Complete." Well, I was wrong. While the songs overall are not as good as a few tracks from "The End Complete," compared as entire works it is a stronger work with just a hair more experimentation. Obituary has incorporated some samples into their typically brutal outlook. This has given their style an ever so slight Industrial vibe that only adds to their angst.

The first track, "Don't Care," is the best one on the entire CD. It crushes and grinds with the power of a Sherman tank. "I Don't Care What They Say, I Don't Care," growls the song. The guitar and bass on this track are AWESOME.

The next track that really clutched me was "Burned In." It starts slow, and then builds pace, and then slows down and gets heavier. It's really rhythmic. It's great for the pit.

Then comes "Redefine." It begins with some really bizarre samples that sound like they are from a Rap song. It quickly goes into a grindfest that is truly cool. This one gets you jumping and thrashing all around. I wanted to whip myself into a frenzy with this one. It has tastefully placed guitar riffs, as did "Don't Care."

"Paralyzing" is a slower grinder that still is a mover. It has it's faster moments, which makes for a nice tempo contrast.

"Solid State" is, well, awesome. It's another Death Metal slugfest. This one is also extremely rhythmic in nature. Halfway through it speeds-up to a supersonic speed that many Thrash Metal bands dream of hitting. Then it slows back down and the drums get some heavy usage. This is one of my other favorites from this opus.

Then comes "Splattered." It starts with a really Industrial sounding rhythm, which is used off and on through the entire song. It has some cool samples. It sounds like the soundtrack for the scenes in the movie "Terminator 2" where in the future the machines are hunting down all of the humans and trying to exterminate them. This song would have been perfect for that movie. Awesome.

Then next is "Final Thoughts." It starts with a sample that sounds like someone is loading a gun and then shoots it. "Is This The End," cries the lyric. It has a very epic sound to it. Awesome.

"Boiling Point" is probably the weakest song on the entire CD, and it is still good. It just doesn't pull the same amount of attitude as the others do. It's still cool though.

"Set In Stone" comes next. It's fast at the beginning and slows down. It has a Bolt Thrower feel to it. Except, it's better.

The final piece of this masterpiece is called "Kill For Me." It has samples from "RM Arts Presents: Repercussions - A Celebration Of African\American Music." The sample is of some rhythms taken from an African drummer and some flouting. It starts with this sample, and then finishes with it. It pours guitar into this the beginning sample and then grinds into the song. It's slow and heavy. But there are other places where the tempo changes and it is fast and heavy. The song is very short. I wish it was longer. After a gap there is some singing and drumming from some more African musicians. It is almost like a hidden track.

Below is a listing of the tracks on the CD. Overall here are the stats on this CD: Obituary, Death Metal, 12 tracks, "World Demise," Roadrunner Records, GET IT. On Vogel's Scale Of World Destruction, this one rates a 10 (which means it's a total World's Demise). :) Later.
