Nokturne - Embracer of Dark Ages
|
CD

Nokturne has got the whole black metal thing down to a science, right down to the corpse paint and inverted crucifixes. The needle on the satanic meter hits the red from the first chords of "Exterminan" and stays there until the final blasts of "Forced into Abattoirs." The lyrics from "Exterminan"paint a grim picture of what's in store for the listener: "Standing tall before a world destroyed by violence/Struck by Armageddon's blast/I hope life continues to exist and rebuilds itself up again/we'll be waiting in their hearts/and in time we'll fuck it all up again." By golly, that's a pretty good summation of the evil that awaits you.
Embracer of Dark Ages has a good drum sound with some cool accents - Lord Doom adds a great deal to the album's violent sound. The album is a firestorm of guitars that rip at you in grand, black metal fashion; a bit like Dark Funeral but with more variety and better production. Songs like "Blood Purging Pentagram," "Nothing," and "War Torch" are played with hellish conviction and leave no room for mercy. The introductory section of "Blood Purging Pentagram" utilizes a distorted, broken glass gurgling, on the vocals screeched out by Malus de Azemodeus - the liner notes describe his role as "Preacher of Revelations," rather than vocalist. While the Preacher's voice raises the hairs on your neck, the guitars wash over you while Lord Doom keeps a death march beat. The song builds with the riffs getting bigger and louder, and at the 2:18 mark it slams you head first into a furious wall of riffs and lightning fast rhythms. All the while, the drums flail away uncontrollably. The vocals on the verse and chorus are brutal and cutting. Speaking of the vocals, you can actually understand most of them with only a pinch of effort.
War Torch" begins with what sounds like a medieval clash. It features the sound of clanking armor, horses, and several thousand warriors fighting to the death. "Nothing" begins with some kind of satanic invocation sung in a language I didn't recognize.
These songs are a good representation of what I liked best about the album (aside from it's general malevolence) - it keeps your interest by changing tempo and assaulting you in a variety of ways. Embracer of Dark Ages is a tortured journey through Hell that lets no human go unscathed!!
