Napalm Death - Inside The Torn Apart

  | CD

Napalm Death-Inside The Torn Apart For almost 10 years now, Napalm Death has defied definition with its innovative mesh of death metal vocals and grindeore guitars put to hardcore rhythms, garnering the band a substantial underground following that has grown far beyond its British homeland. Inside The Torn Apart, the band's seventh album, continues the band's journey on the cutting edge, expanding on the groovy, nearbursting sound of its most recent effort, a split EP with Coalesce, titled In Tongues We Speak. Cohn Richardson's crystal clear, almost glossy production propels the band's music into the late '90s, yet stays true so the grinding guitars and gritty vocals which have won Napalm Death its title as the "Originators Of Grindeore." Danceable, aggressive grooves beaten out by guitars wielded like swords are broken up by explosive drums, pounding out a punk beat that will force you to dance. And thank goodness the band worked out its personal differences to enable lead throat Barney Greenway so rejoin. He may have shed some of his weight in the past few years, but his aggressive, anger-inducing vocals still sound as if they're generated by a two-ton grizzly bear. Like pass albums, Inside doesn't rely on any one song formula and, also as on past albums, certain cuts stand out more than others - the opening track, "Breed To Breathe," is an immediate attention grabber - but as a whole, Inside... gels better than pass Napalm records. Check out the Sepulturastyle drumming and hardcore screaming on the title track and the moshable breakdown on "Low Point." Our only hope is that the mellowness of the last track, "The Lifeless Alarm," isn't an indication of a more mellow future for the band.
