This 6 track EP is the first offering by Spanish tongued Texan death metal power trio Muerte Villa, who (unsurprisingly) hail from close to the Mexican border. There's little in the way of complexity here, as this trio
specializes in tequila-soaked, piledriver styled death metal. Influences in riff and groove structures mostly remind of long-standing genre acts such as Deranged and Vomitory, while the whole concept and breakneck delivery of Muerte Villa breathes an atmosphere down the line of fellow Mexicans Brujeria. The production is pretty solid with a meaty guitar tone and a brick heavy drum sound. The violently barked grunts sound streetwise and tough which in combination with the aggressive Spanish lyrics turns into an experience pretty much like a severe beating. The artwork and lay-out fit in with the Mexican concept and contain a number of historical images and maps. While the delivery is solid Muerte Villa are not re-inventing the wheel in any way or form, yet the concept that drives this band is a major plus and elevates them beyond just another faceless brutal death metal band. If the band further fleshes out their nationalistic Mexican concept, further hones their skills and expand their thematics, they might just become a novelty act with a longevity usually reserved for pioneering acts. Be sure to pick this one up, if you're up for something familiar yet somehow slightly
different.
