Is Antony Milton New Zealand's busiest man? It sure seems like it. With a handful of solo projects and another handful of groups under his belt – not to mention the duties of running the mighty fine Pseudoarcana imprint – it seems that Milton has no time for menial chores such as sleeping or eating. This is good news for us devourers of music, as there's a lengthy and varied catalogue of releases to acquire and explore.

Milton has described the music attributed to his Mrtyu project as being a sort of tantric metal, a sludgy doom ritual that could have been performed by a group of subterranean hierophants. "Blood Tantra" is a massive two-disc set that collects the out of print "Durga" full-length (released on Audiobot) and "The Burning Ground" 3-inch (released on Battlecruiser), as well as introducing an extended unreleased track. The music calls to mind images of powerful sorcerers battling grotesque hellions in the deepest reaches of Hades, or a lost tribe of aboriginal warriors engaging in a post-war ceremony paying bloody tribute to the gods. Throbbing, skull-crushing bass drone and gut-shearing high-end feedback mingle mercilessly overtop flutes, bells and vocal chants. These tracks are lengthy, unsettling and ritualistic – food for the darkest regions of your mind.

The word 'mrtyu' in Sanskrit means 'death.' But death in the Hindu sense: a journey from birth through life and ultimately to the kingdom of Yama (the god of death). The music recorded by Antony Milton under the Mrtyu moniker is the aural equivalent to the Hindu eschatology. "Blood Tantra" is a sonic narrative of the journey we take onwards towards the kingdom of death. 10/10 -- Bryon Hayes
