Another release for the German Christhunt. Mortal Intention, coming from Germany, are devoted to a very personal death/black metal, obviously derived from Sweden. The band is formed by five members (two guitars, a voice-synth, a bass guitar and drums), and they succeed in realizing an heterogeneous and not stereotyped album. The sound presents many influences along the eight tracks of "Sic Luceat Lux": you can find clear references to the Swedish black metal roots (that are the strong point of the album), but also to the less canonical death metal, atmospherical passages now and then and as much aggressiveness as melody. A very well-balanced production gives its share to the perfect outcome of the album, and it was not an easy task, considering the various styles taking turns during the compositions. These sudden style changes don't distort the band's sound, that is always very compact. Also the singer helps in creating the right mood, shaping his own voice according to the passages following one another, passing from the classic black metal scream to the growl voice. Maybe is questionable the choice to sing all the songs' lyrics in their mother-tongue, 'cause this way they keep those who don't speak german from understanding what they say. Anyway, the one thing that impressed me the most is the great work done by the two guitars, that are able to create quite original and winning riffs, alternating complexity with an evocative simplicity. "Sic Luceat Lux", in the end, is a very good and well-balanced album, not founded only on velocity, but also on the taste for composition. It's an album that could make all the extreme sound's fans happy, but could also please those who are searching for a sort of refinement.
