MASSEMORD (not to be confused with the Norwegian band MASSEMORD) is a young band hailing from Poland and has previously released one well-received demo ("Another Holocaust Rises" from 1993). The band rose from the ashes of the band HEREZ, who (as far as I know) never released anything.
When I first read the title "Hatred Towards Mankind And Life Itself", I became very enthusiastic since it appears to be a quote from my favourite CARPATHIAN FOREST track "The Swordsmen". But MASSEMORD's music does not have much in common with the aforementioned band at all. Judging from the cover art, the title and the band name (MASSEMORD means mass murder in Norwegian); I thought I was in for some "true Norwegian Black Metal"-worship. I was wrong.
Roughly, one can say that MASSEMORD play modern Black Metal with some Industrial touches, but the variation in the material presented on this demo makes them hard to categorize. The demo is recorded in one of the band member's home studio and the production is pretty good for a home recording. Still, the synth and samples can often be a bit hard to hear in some parts. There is a lot of variation in pace and rhythm, ranging from high-speed to mid-tempo and with many tempo changes. The guitars create a wall of noise, while a melodic riff is often played on top. Drum computers usually don't fit very well with this type of music, but in this case it is well programmed and most of the time it actually sounds like a real drummer, but it becomes a bit monotonous in the fastest parts. The material on this demo is very strong, except for "God Of Latex Fire" (contender for worst song title of the year), a track that suffers from slightly uninventive riffs and annoying drums. They have also included a cover of DØDHEIMSGARD ("Ion Storm", from the "666 International" album), a band that has a lot in common with MASSEMORD. It basically sounds like a stripped down version of the original, but it fits in with the rest of the material.
I am very impressed by this demo and I'll be surprised if no labels offer MASSEMORD a contract in the nearest future. They have succeeded in creating their own sound. However, in order to avoid misunderstandings from future record buyers, they should consider changing their name, since the Norwegian MASSEMORD at the moment has two albums out on the market. Keep an eye out for this band! (Online July 26, 2004) -metal-observer.com
