This album was written over the period of a decade, so you must therefore, expect it to be good if it has had so much time and effort put into it. Well the first thing to note is that this is indeed good, very good in fact. The opening track “In Memory…” kicks off in Bathory “Hammerheart” era style with epic pounding
beats and soaring guitars. The clean chanting vocals are there with extreme Burzum style black metal screams over the top of them. The second track “A Call From Gods To God” starts off a lot faster and showcases some excellent aggressive black metal which still has that epic aura surrounding the guitar riffs which are hypnotic yet clinical in their delivery, which is especially apparent when the track slows down to mid-pace where some soaring keyboards and then acoustic guitars accompany to add further atmosphere. The rest of the album is similar in that it ranges from epic soaring soundscapes of epic metal to fast, aggressive and clinical black metal. The production is excellent, clear, heavy and polished. Some nice booklet imagery as well, rounding off a must have release for fans of black metal.

Nach vierjähriger Funkstille hat wohl niemand mehr damit gerechnet, vom Griechen mit Macabre Omen noch etwas neues zu hören und nun wurde plötzlich gar ein Album veröffentlicht. Diese Überraschung ist voll und ganz gelungen, denn The ancient returns ist ein durch und durch gelungenes Album voller Hymnen und Melodien die unter die Haut gehen, zum Teil sogar einen Hauch epischer Bathory-Atmosphäre haben. Die neuste Veröffentlichung schließt quasi nahtlos an den älteren Veröffentlichungen Macabre Omens an, lediglich der Klang ist nicht mehr so rau und markant wie früher und auch der Gesang von Alexandros verhält sich etwas entschärft. Diese zwei Details sind auch die einzigen wirklichen Kritikpunkte, da The ancient returns dadurch im Vergleich zum alten Liedgut etwas flach wirkt.

Qualitativ gibt es aber nichts auszusetzen, denn Macabre Omen glänzen musikalisch einfach in jeder Lage. Egal ob in den langsameren und ruhigeren Passagen mit den bandtypischen und traumhaften Gitarrenmelodien, welche immer auch ein wenig melancholisch und sehnsüchtig wirken oder bei den schnellen, dezidiert antreibenden Strecken die wegen der reichhaltigen akustischen Untermalung zu keiner Zeit einfach nur eingängig rüberkommen. Es ist wohl nicht übertrieben, zu behaupten mit The ancient returns ist Alexandros mit Macabre Omen ein ausgezeichnetes Werk gelungen, das bereits jetzt zu den besten Veröffentlichungen in diesem Jahr zu zählen ist. Wer das nicht glauben mag, sollte sich A call from gods to god oder Hellas – Oda A / Ode B in Ruhe anhören. Somit dürften Macabre Omen wohl endgültig – neben Nocternity – derzeit zur Speerspitze des griechischen Black Metals gehören.

APOKALYPTIC RAIDZ IX: BLACK/DEATH UNDERGROUND REPORT

Long in the making and featuring The One mainman Evil Dark at the (battle-ready) helm, Macabre Omen’s The Ancient Returns debut [Blutreinheit/Monstrous Star: www.macabreomen.cjb.net] is like the strangest, most amazing amalgam of the Hammerheart, Det Som Engang Var, Non Serviam, and Scarlet Evil Witching Black classics, and yet emerging all the more unique: Beyond-hysterical Varg-shrieks multi-tracked with solemn heathen chants and narrative vox-rumble, layer/layer/layers of riff with ridiculously poignant leads frequently taking center stage, subtly arranged synth that’s actually an integral component, and cinematic songcraft you literally get sucked into, fully absorbed by a perpetually rolling/roiling maelstrom that’s equally hypnotic and dynamic, its psychedelic longship of Wagnerian might always going places but never loitering too long, ever ready to surge forward into further battles within the mind. To paraphrase an album highlight – what am I saying, they’re all highlights! – this in indeed “The Perfect Sound of North vs. South,” and an absolute essential.
