Kalmah - Swampsong

  | CD

Kalmah-Swampsong Kalmah are now releasing their third full length and if this one doesn't get them attention stateside - nothing will. Their two previous efforts were gems of Swedish melodic metal (although the band themselves hail from Finland) and "Swampsong" eclipses those efforts.
In the past, this band sort of got labelled a Children of Bodom clone, but with "Swampsong", I think they've kind of cast those comparisons aside. Musically, they've found their own identity a tad more with this new offering. Kalmah show a level of expertise in each of their instruments that few others possess, but they've really managed to write a good bunch of songs for "Swampsong", including "Doubtful About It All", which has one of the most interesting, complex and hard to follow lead melodies that I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. The chugging guitar backdrop is quite impressive as well. Musically, I might compare them to something along the lines of Children of Bodom meeting up with old Megadeth. It's thrash influenced, but more in the traditional sense as opposed to bands like The Haunted. With the help of great production and cover art that is of top quality, Kalmah stand poised to take the world outside Europe by storm.

These days, Kalmah stand side by side with Children of Bodom and the like, rather than behind them. "Swampsong" should turn some heads.
