HEADMEAT – DESTRUCTIVE ENTITLEMENT
(BAPHOMET – 2004)
Belgium is not exactly the hotbed of European Death Metal now is it? However, just like their close neighbors in Holland, Germany and France, this country has been able to throw up their own individual entities that for all intents and purposes make their rivals look decidedly lightweight. Belgium’s 'Headmeat' may not be the most original Death Metal act around, but they do have the goods to make them stand out from the endless list of other cookie cutter death metal acts.

Formed in Autumn 1998, Headmeat (which translates from the Belgium (Flemish I think) dialect as Uufflacke) arose out of the ashes of black metal bands Faustian Moon, When Autumn Ended and Morto Perpet. Looking to forge a more technical death metal sound, the band released a couple of local demos and then in 2002 they entered CCR studio’s (Aborted, Leng Tch'e) and recorded this four song EP entitled 'Destructive Entitlement'. Not long after Killjoy and the crew at Baphomet liked what they heard and signed the band for two discs (including this one).

'Headmeat' play a bruising kind of Death Metal with just a smidgen of sludge and grind thrown in for variation. Along with some well-placed movie samples, there is also a healthy thrash groove style embedded within. If I had to make any sort of comparison, Headmeat's sound instantly reminded me of classic Incantation. The low, guttural vocals of Nuyt (aka: liveandhornysexcam) make this association even more prevalent. As a European Death Metal act, it could be construed that Headmeat actually sound rather American in their music approach.

For a rather unknown/small band, the production on 'D.E' is very impressive (just who was responsible is not listed), particularly the guitar mix – thick and pummeling as required. As with anything that Killjoy touches, the presentation of this disc is superb. The digi pack version comes with some excellent artwork, plus an eight-page booklet with lyrics. As a bonus, Baphomet has also included a multimedia video for the track 'Ingrained Frenzy', highlighting just what a crazy bunch of maniacs these Belgians are – live action, bad porn and general drunkenness and stupidity abound. To top it off, they’ve given themselves alias' – my favorite, guitarist Pui who work under the pseudonym of Shitfacedcockmaster! Ha!

Currently Headmeat are in Belgium's CCR studio putting down tracks for a new album. Apparently, these tracks will hint of a more technically mature Headmeat sound, a bit darker, less grind and more horror oriented. All laced with their wicked sense of humor. In the meantime, if you are chasing any new Death Metal music out of Europe (and you like Incantation), you could do worse than checking out Headmeat. They're only a young band, but this is solid and entertaining enough for most brutal heads.

Their name is Headmeat and their guitarist/vocalist is called "Shit Faced Cock Master"....

So as you see, we’re already on the right course. "Destructive Entitlement" is a four song E.P. that shows this Belgian death metal band scathing forth some mentally scarring death metal with elements across the board. Added in are nods of grind, doom and crust punk to add even further gangrene to the material. As for the death metal aspect think "Human" era Death, early Obituary and Blood Red Throne.

It’s a very strong offering that calls on death metal elements both modern and classic. Highly recommended! Review by Ryan Bartek
