| OK, after many EP's and vinyls comes the debut full length from Hate Forest. The Ukranian band that has been hyped to heaven by Supernal Music. Of course Supernal Music don't put their name to any old crap and this release demonstrates this, so their hype is well justified - indeed you are men of good taste. So "The Most Ancient Ones" is actually a reworking of a cassette they did a couple of years ago called "The Curse" that was recorded live. The 8 tracks on the darkest, most vicious that Hate Forest have done so far. The vocals are at their most guttural with screams from the second guitarist being more than before. The songs still remain identifiable to the band with that subtle Slavonic flavour in their music. As before the layout is minimal with just photos of obscure anonymous landscapes and no photographs of the band and they give won't give interviews, ooooohhhh!!!! how scary. If you can get over the nationalistic bullshit that Hate Forest spew then you will find many an enjoyable, escapist moment with this release. Their is also a cassetter version of this via Supernal Music too which has a different front cover to the CD version. |

| This album is good, but "Purity" is a lot better. The songs on this album are a lot more hateful on here than on "Purity." "Inmost Winter" is the only song on here that has a sad sound to it. The guitars form melodies out of chaos, and they remind me of Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger," but they are a lot more clear on here (the production on this album is good). The final song "The Curse," leaves you wondering about things with the final guitar riff that ends it. To me, this album trys to express a mood/story. It's that we want a better, Whiter and Brighter World, but seeing how worthless everyone is (even the Whites of today) and how hopeless and grim the situation is for the White Race today that hatred for all things living is inevitable (hence the statements "True Aryan Black Metal" at the front, and "With Hate and Scorn to Worthless Humanity, it's values and ideals"). Hate Forest's music is a manifestation of our hatred for this whole modern world. And as far as for "Vincent Eldefor" who said it "The fact that their music has been referred to as cold aryan metal is very concerning to me," I have one thing to say. You bought a weapon against yourself when you bought this album (any subhumans buying a Hate Forest album buys a weapon against himself)! 88! RAHOWA! |

| Hate Forest is the purest, most hateful piece of black shit in the world. Taking black metal to new pastures in my opinion and making it more evil and far darker than ever before. You can almost feel the rain on the leaves above you, smell the fire from the church in the distance, this is black metal. |

| Hate Forest is a rather unusual and controversial band that hails from the Ukraine. They play raw black metal with dark death growls and refuse to do any interviews and according to their biography "every subhuman buying hate forest releases buys a weapon against himself". The band started recording their first songs in 1995 and have released several mini albums and seven inches so far. "The Most Ancient Ones" is in fact nothing but a re-recorded version of their demo / live rehearsal cassette tape "The Curse" which was released through Kolovrat / Nawia Productions early in the band's career. This recording features a brand new line-up and the songs are allegedly played twice as fast as on the original tape which I find hard to believe but this is still a pretty good example of cold primitive black metal with haunting evil melodies (listen to the title track and "Inmost Winter" and you know what I mean). The fact that their music has been referred to as cold aryan metal is very concerning to me but I have been told not to stick my nose into that subject so therefore I will not (oh, did I, sorry...). It is not really a masterpiece, definitely not production-wise, but it is a good album and Darkthrone fans might very well want to investigate this release further. Song listing: 1.
