Another year with yet another Graveland album. It seems Rob Darken is extremely productive in terms of writing music because his latest epos is from late 2004.

The new album is entitled "Fire chariots of destruction" and it once again contains amazing artwork. The best possible way to fully enjoy the artwork is to buy the A5 digibook (another Graveland tradition is to release the full-length albums as A5 digibooks) or even better the gatefold 12" vinyl which includes the "Impaler's wolves" mini as well as an unreleased bonustrack. Musically this new epos doesn't hold any surprises and the die-hard Graveland fans know exactly what to expect: great epic pagan/ black metal. For the ones who haven't heard Graveland yet (do they exist at all?) the band plays mostly midpaced pagan/ black metal with its roots in the Celtic and Germanic history. In the many years of existence Rob managed to come up with a complete own sound and musical style with the distinctive vocals on top. The songs are all quite long in length and the total duration of "Fire chariots of destruction" comes close to 61 minutes. Just like on the last couple of albums there is not much variation in the songs but on the other hand this brings forth a kind of mental state of escaping into your own thoughts and it can work out quite hypnotizing. Graveland's music can definitely not be seen as 'easy-listening' music but instead you really need to sit down and fully concentrate to enjoy the album in the best possible way. And I think exactly this is what music should do; give one the possibility to escape the struggles of daily life.

With "Fire chariots of destruction" Graveland once more released a very good epos of pagan/ black metal and the die-hard fans can buy this album without any doubt. The ones who aren't familiar with Graveland but enjoy pagan- and black metal should definitely check this band out because Graveland is one of the few with a very distinctive face and sound in the overpopulated scene.
