Gothica - The Cliff of Suicide
|
CD
Alessandra Santovito and Roberto Del Vecchio follow Gothica's debut album, Night Thoughts, with The Cliff of Suicide, another dreamy gothic-ethereal tour de force. Cold Meat describe it as "a slow and introspective voyage inside the morbid and beautifully depressive side of our psyche". Well, lyrics apart I don't find the sound of this morbid or depressing but it is beautiful - a dark beauty born of Alessandra's ethereal vocals soaring and floating above a dark neoclassical soundtrack created by keyboards, organic instruments (flute, oboe, percussion and violin), and programming.
As with their first album, there is so much maturity here as if, like Athena, they had emerged from the forehead of Zeus fully formed. Gothica have basically distilled the essence of gothic-ethereal, bottled it, packaged it and made it available for consumption. The product is a paragon of its kind and cannot be faulted. I thought 'La Vida Es Sueño', sung largely unaccompanied, is particularly strong. Giving full range to Alessandra's voice it compares very favourably to the quality many professional early music groups singing mediaeval songs. -Fluxeuropa.com
