Gorguts - Obscura

  | CD

Gorguts-Obscura At the end of last millenium all metal genres began to expand, as all the ideas inside them were already explored so much, that most of bands became obvious, it was very hard to get suprised. And so there were a lighter "new age" bands as Dying Fetus, amazingly combining Suffocation style with hardcore side more exposed and excellent technical approach), medium psychotic acts such as Cephalic Carnage (with "Psycho" off the "Lucid Interval" so so great), and... finally!
Gorguts was a band that began a career with many other bands, when death metal was in it's top form. It became more popular with the second album called "The Erosion of Sanity", which besides stunning death metal riffs, presented a fresh approach of composing. Luc Lemay, main coordinator and the only original member was studying classical music at the time, and you can feel it! But that's not all. Third album, "Obscura", released in 1998, was (and as for today standards, still is) a piece of music so revolutionary, that it easily can be placed among many classic jazz records. Take death metal riffs, but make them schizophrenic beyond any music that is psychotic and does not fall completely into the spaces that some might call "noise", "free", "improvisations", or just "cacophonous". And yes, I mean also Dillinger Escape Plan on "Calculating Infinity". There is an order here, structures are repeatable, music is highly mathematically composed, but that's some sick quantum physics math. There's no melody in theory, but in practice you somehow slowly, one listening after another, learn to enjoy them, and enjoy them very much! All the musicans are doing their job perfectly, one time all at once making these strange equations out of the weirdest spheres of human mind, the other setting a simplier tempo to which the guitars are making sounds Masami Akita might want to put onto his next record.
"Obscura" is not an extreme metal outfit mixed with classical music way of composing, it's total devastation of people's ideas about music. There really are not many as revolutionary creations, as this album is. They probably did set to high standard to be able to continue and expand (oh how I'd love to hear that). "From Wisdom to Hate", released 3 years later showed a lot simplier approach, more "readable", yet unrewarding, in my personal opinion the weakest of Gorguts gems. I can still listen to "Obscura", probably 1xxx time, without getting bored in even one moment. But that's enough talking. You go and buy it, it's for your own good. - killa bee
