8/10 Skulls
Let's go back to the early days, shall we? There was a time when Death Metal sounded much thrashier, heavier, and simply put, much looser than today's highly technical outfits. It was a time when bands like Death, Possessed, and even Slayer let it rip. Well, that's what Godless Rising is all about. This debut effort, clocking in at about 25 minutes, hearkens back to those days, which were filled with churning drums, tinny guitars, and clearly grunted/shrieked vocals. The music on Rising Hatred is actually given room to breathe - you can actually hear the percussive progressions and guitar switches going off. Guitar-wise, Paul Flynn and Jeff Gruslin (both former members of Vital Remains) take a riff from the NWOBHM, with rhythm/lead duels throughout the proceedings. Lyrics are old school, too, reminding me of Slayer's and Venom's versions of the Dark Lord and evil in general. You'll either want to exhume this corpse or simply let it be - the choice is yours.

GODLESS RISING - Rising Hatred - CD - Pathos Productions - 2006
review by: Larissa Glasser

Rising Hatred is very aggressive, old-skull thrash / death from the Mordor that is Rhode Island. Guttural yet technical, aggressive yet deliberate, Godless Rising is poised to lead the New England metal scene. The band comprises former members of Vital Remains, Ritual Sacrifice and Amputator, so in a way, they could be considered a supergroup. Their recent signing to The Moribund Cult heralds much more to come.

Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of this recording is its 80's production style, hearkening back to the good old Florida nostalgia of early Death and Obituary. The iniquitous narratives "Soulless," "Devour The Cross" and "Mortal Failures" are standouts.

Godless Rising plays A LOT of shows, which partly explains the strength of the band's performance on Rising Hatred. If you want your metal to sound intimidating, here is the ritual. (8.5/10)
