Gnaw Their Tongues - An Epiphanic Vomiting of Blood
|
CD
Rarely these days is a band/artist able to genuinely scare the living shit out of you quite like Dutch act Gnaw Their Tongues. Far removed by the confides of conventional – even unconventional – extreme music, Gnaw Their Tongues apocalyptic soundscapes are one of pitch black metallic ambience, building the core of its paranormal sound on distorted, disjointed and discordant riffs, ritual drum programming (excellently done I might add) and more eerie synths and samples than you can shake a shitty stick at.
Often categorised as black noise, Gnaw Their Tongues' utterly unique approach to music has taken an even sicker, more depraved approach on new album "An Epiphanic Vomiting of Blood", which far more developed than last years outstanding "Reeking Pained and Shuddering" is truly one of the greatest releases this writer has ever come across. Hard to describe its effects in mere words "An Epiphanic…" is something that needs to be experienced, allowing the maelstrom of filth and depravity to consume you whole and leave a lasting that is impossible to both ignore and forget. With tracks as monstrous and gruelling as "Teeth That Leer Like Open Graves" and "The Sewer Rats Of Calcutta" it is easy to forget that this is the work of just one man, effortlessly laying to waste anything, everything and anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path. The droning, heavily distorted bass lines mangle your insides to a bloody pulp, while the almost psychedelic coupling of synths/samples and guitar serve to maliciously scrape away any remaining bits of skin, particularly on the final two tracks "And There Will Be More Of Your Children Dead Tomorrow" and "The Urge To Participate In Butchery".
Completely unrelenting and superbly constructed "An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood" is an absolute must for anyone seeking something darker than the now (sadly) constrained confides of your usual black metal act. In summery this is another simply amazing release from one of the genres most exciting and unpredictable artists.
