| Fermento - Insignia 2004 Voliac Records 01. Insignia 02. March of the Brute (instrumental) 03. Untermensch 04. Hunger Among Wolves 05. Messiah to Burn 06. Only the Strong Should Dominate 07. Falling for Wotan There is a certain kind of album that, as a fan of the sick and brutal metal underbelly, I am always hoping to find. An album like this one! Fermento have delivered and then some. Not having heard this band before I wasn't sure what to expect. With a name like Fermento I thought typical goregrind without surprises. Boy was I ever wrong! This is insanity like you've never experienced it! Musically they sound like a gore band but lyrically they are about war and conquest more akin to a band like Angel Corpse. The vocals are top notch utilizing a huge array of styles and techniques. Completely inhuman and sick without the help of a pitch shifter or harmonizer. It is my understanding that the vocalist for this band was one of the first to pull off the totally brutal sewer pipe growls that vocalists such as Matti Way have embraced. The songwriting on this album is excellent. How often do you find a band so intense and brutal that has advanced songwriting skills. With only 7 songs, this album is mostly 5, 6, 7 minute epics. Songs that are completely unpredictable and flow through jaw dropping sections completely ignoring conventional song structure. I'll have to listen to this a shitload of times before I can remember how all these songs go. It is incredibly effective and some of the best songwriting i've ever heard from a band as brutal as this. I've heard that they've upped the technicality for this one and i'm not surprised to hear it because the playing on here is pretty damn technical and complex and leaves nothing to be desired. I am extremely impressed with the drummer who totally rips it up throughout the whole disc playing nothing but technical and creative patterns. He pounds his drums to hell too and they don't sound sound triggered. I've never been one to worry about production but i have nothing to complain about. The drums pound, the vocals are loud, guitars have pretty dirty sound and that is exactly the way it should be. I really can't make much in the way of comparisons here. This is a unique band that you have to hear to understand. Insignia is perhaps my favourite release so far this year and that is saying alot; I will most definetly be checking out their earlier work. Bands that mix such high levels of brutality and creativity are exactly what the world needs. And I thought Disgorge mex was intense.. Fanfuckingtastic. |
