Peter B.: Criterion comes from Norway and back in 1992 they started out as a Metallica cover band. Well, today they play a different kind of metal. Old school death metal is what the sheet says, but I would call it brutal and fast, yet melodic death metal with an old touch. This band consists of good musicians. The Norwegians combine aggression and melody in a fine way and add a good dose of exciting breaks and structure to it. The band doesn't sound too refreshing, but they're clearly not boring. Here and there they even slow down a bit and guitarist Kim Nybakken gets some space to add great technical solos to some songs. Also the great drumming by Kenneth Skarholen gives you the right adrenaline boost. The band is completed by the tight bass player Rene Johansen and the good and deep death grunt from singer John R. Urbanski. "The Dominant" is the debut cd by Criterion and it has to be said: they really sound good! Keep your eyes and ears open for these guys in the future!
