The Pass in Time is the second album by Cales, a side-project by Root guitarist Blackosh. Their sound is not miles removed from latter-day Root, but it is far from the same. There is a bit more of a mellow acoustic component to Cales, and less of a blackedged metal assault. The pace is also generally slower, rarely breaking out of a midpaced contemplative tempo. However there are similarities, mainly in the guitar playing and songwriting style of course, but also in the production and majestic feel. The guitar sound is pretty much identical to Black Seal. The main difference might be that while Root is pretty decidedly modern in sound, Cales tends to draw inspiration and instrumentation from the past, both immediate (70's progressive rock) and ancient (Celtic folk music). While strongly rooted in modern metal, there are a myriad of influences swirling around the periphery, drifting in and out of the heavy rock soundscapes.
