Berserk - Rites of Supremacy
|
CD
So far there are very few metal bands from Spain who have made a bigger impression on me, especially when it comes to extreme metal. I like Dark Moor and Tierra Santa but that is not exactly what you would call extreme metal. Now things have changed with the second album from the pagan black metal warriors of Berserk. "Rites Of Supremacy" is a nice proof of the fact that you don't have to reinvent yourself or the entire genre you're a part of to produce something entertaining. The bands on the Adipocere sublabel Oaken Shield are sometimes a little so and so in quality but they have managed to sign some interesting acts, one being Berserk and the other the Swedish black metal act Blodsrit who also released their second album for the label earlier this year. As usual the production could have been better but I'm not sure if that would have made the music sound better. In fact it could give just the pposite result since the old-school black metal that Berserk perform is in need of this particular atmosphere to sound good and awaken the pagan spirit within you. "Rites Of Supremacy" is a very even album where no track stands out clearly from the others. It sound a little like a mix between Darkthrone and older Thyrfing so if you are a fan of these two bands there is a chance you would fancy this as well. Peaceville may think that Asgaroth is the finest extreme metal act Spain has produced thus far but my vote would probably go to Berserk. - Vincent Eldefors
