| As I return from the the warzone, I bring you Conquest, the latest offering from the soldiers of thrash, Abominant. This CD is truely deep-rooted in an old-school style of metal that may or may not appeal to all. Personally, I found it very entertaining. Conquest could be described as deathrash or maybe even powerviolence. Depends on how you perceive it. Abominant play a very thick sounding wall of aggressive guitar driven riffs mixed with an up and down drum tempo that drives home the point well. Amongst all this chunky metal, there is an underlying melodic sound thrown in for good measure. For the most part, Abominant make it work. The music is very reminiscent of late 80's to early 90's thrash. When they slow down the pace, Gardenian or Children of Bodom come to mind. When they are more thrashy and fast, Aggressor or even Dissection pop in your head. Vocally, Abominant use a duel style approach that mostly leads with the death gruff style, but from time to time, the 80's high pitch screams grace your speakers. It is actually a nice touch to their overall sound, and make the entire package even more nostalgic. Most of the songs are alike, so there are no real standouts or likewise, no crap either. If I could name a favorite, it would have to be "Set You to Burn", the opening speedy chords really get your attention. There are times where the CD lags a bit with overly-long solos, but since the CD is under 40 minutes, it is passable. Conquest gets my recomendation for a great stroll down thrash metal lane, so take that into consideration. However, also take into consideraton that this not up to lethal standards either.
